The seasonal dynamics of avifauna at Bolhradskyi Syvashyk Liman (Zaporizhzhia and Kherson Regions)

The avifauna of Bolhradskyi Syvashyk Liman (hereinafter Syvashyk) is poor studied and any detailed publications are practically absent. Seasonal aspects of Syvashyk avifauna have been analyzed on the basis of the materials collected in 1988-2015. Generally, the wetland of Syvashyk supports conservation of high bird species diversity – at least 170 species and a significant part of the waterbird community. Maximal numbers reach 9,870 individuals in spring, 4,085 – in the fist half of summer, 30,050 in August, 19,600 – in autumn and 18,000 in winter. In August, the summarized number of waterbirds at Syvashyk corresponds to one of the Ramsar criteria. The highest species diversity of the avifauna is also recorded in August (104 species including 70 waterbird species) and summer in whole. Weather conditions of particular seasons cause significant changes in the number of hydrophilic species between years, especially in summer and winter periods. Thirty-nine bird species, recorded at Syvashyk, are included in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009). It confirms high conservation value of this area which, since 2010, has become a part of the Pryazovskyi National Natural Park.
