Transactions
of the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station
The publication presents results of birds of prey census conducted in 2006 and 2010 in the valley of the ZdvyzhRiver (Zhytomyr and Kyiv Regions, Ukraine). The census has covered the entire river valley area, 145 km in total. During fieldworks there were registered: 4 pairs of the Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus) or 0.27 pair per 10 km; 2 pairs of the Black Kite (Milvus migrans) or 0.13 pair per 10 km; 19 pairs of the Montagu`s Harrier (Circus pygargus) or 1.31 pair per 10 km; 23 pairs of the Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) or 1.58 pair per 10 km; 4 pairs of the Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) or 0.27 pair per 10 km; 2 pairs of the Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) or 0.13 pair per 10 km; 54 pairs of the Buzzard (Buteo buteo) or 3.72 pair per 10 km; 5 pairs of the Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) or 0.34 pair per 10 km; 11 pairs of the Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina) or 0.75 pair per 10 km; 9 pairs of Hobby (Falco subbuteo) or 0.62 pair per 10 km; 6 pairs of Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) or 0.75 pair per 10 km. A total of 139 breeding pairs of raptors were counted.
