Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) in Ukraine

E.S.Tarasova

Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is a rare species on passage in Eastern Europe and Ukraine. Only 10 meetings of this species are known in the second half of 20th century in Ukraine. Two young flamingos were observed on 26 September 2004, on Pokrovskaya Spit of Kinburnskiy Peninsula (Nikolayev region). These birds presumably flew into Ukraine, deviating from their migratory route along the southern coast of the Black Sea. Possibly they flew from Turkey, where a breeding group of flamingos exists.
