Observation of Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio) at the Sivash

Andryushchenko Yu.A., Ardamatskaya T.B., Belik V.P., Gavrilenko V.S.

The nearest to Ukraine part of the Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio poliocephalus) distribution range is located at the western coast of the Caspian Sea in the lower reaches of the Terek and Sula rivers. In past, this species sometimes flew into the south of Ukraine. Our Purple Gallinule was recorded 11 October 2003 in the north of the Central Sivash at the village Stroganovka (Novotroitsky district, Kherson region). The bird was feeding near reedbeds in the shallow waters of the pond made by water from several artesian wells. It may have appeared in the area near Sivash: from the zoo or zoofarm; because of heavy south-eastern wind; or as a result of migration.
