At present in Saratov Zavolzhye region small groups of Great Bustards (Otis tarda L.) spend winter almost every year. In this period birds inhabitance is connected with vast areas of agricultural lands, some parts of which do not have snow cover. Thus, the results of quantitative registrations, made in the period from the first half of November to the first half of March in 1999-2001 in Saratov Zavolzhye region within Rovensky and southern part of Engels district of Saratov region, have shown that the total number of Great Bustard winter population is at least 100 birds. However, for the estimation of the total number of Bustards, spending winter in Saratov Zavolzhye region, it is necessary to make winter calculations on a vaster territory.
