Wintering of Long-eared and Short-eared Owls in the West of the Nikolaev region

Data on wintering of Long-eared (Asio otus L.) and Short-eared Owls (Asiofiammeus Pontopp.) were collected in 1992-1999 in the Vesdinovski district and on Zmeinyi Island. Counts in the village of Shirokolanovka gave following totals: 13.03.96 – 140, 27.12.97-85, 16.02.98-30, 9.01.99 – 80 Long-eared Owls. Two pairs were found breeding in 1995. Maximum number of Short-eared Owls was recorded in a waste-area near village of Shirokolanovka: 22.01.1995 – 21 birds. The latest record of 16 Short­eared Owls was made on 30.03.1995. The last species migrates though Zmeinyi Island in spring and autumn. Numbers are not high.
