Supposed breeding of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius L.) at the south-eastern shore of Kakhovske Reservoir

Observations of two juveniles on 6 and 7 July 2014 and one adult of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker on 3 August 2014 on “Lysa Hora” at the south-eastern shore of Kakhovske Reservoir (Vasylivka District, Zaporizhzhia Region, N 47°27´17´´, E 35°14´56´´) allow regarding the bird as a new breeding species in the area. This conclusion is grounded on the following: a – all records were made within the same area; b –species movements even in the northern parts of its range start only in autumn (early September - October); c – fledglings leave nests in early June, i.e. at the time of the observation they were about 1-month age; d – the nearest recorded breeding points are as far as 150 km north and the birds with undeveloped flight feathers hardly were able to overcome this distance.
