The feather mites of waders of Sivash

Kivganov D.A., Chernichko E.I.

Researches at the Sivash (lagoon of the Sea of Azov) were conducted over the period from 1997 to 2005. More than 600 waders of 22 species were inspected. Birds were caught with traps of different types (mist-nets, “hunting’s cylinders”, etc). Captured birds were examined to discover feather mites through binocular magnifying glass. After that, birds were ringed and let out in nature. As a result of investigation of waders in the Sivash wetlands, 44 species of feather mites, relating to 17 genera of 5 families were found. Families of Avenzoariidae (14 species) and Alloptidae (10 species) were the most represented. Families of Ingrassiidae and Syringobiidae were the worst represented (6 species). Family of Pterolichidae occupied intermediate position (8 species). Thus, as a result of the conducted work we completed the list of hosts for seven species of feather mites — Ingrassia limnodromi, Tectingrassia holoplax, Alloptes crassipes, A. eroliae, Montchadskiana eroliae, Limosilichus limosae, Brephosceles haematopi.
