Species diversity of the breeding bird communities in the coastal areas of the Sivash

Andryushchenko Y.A., Diadicheva E.A., Chemichko R.N.

The main results of the studies undertaken in April-June 1996 in accordance with the project ‘‘Monitoring of species diversity of birds in the wetlands of South Ukraine having international and national significance’’ are presented. Ten territories in the Sivash were investigated. Four car counts and 19 route counts on foot were carried out. A total of 478.4 km was covered by the census. The diversity of breeding birds (in total 63 species) was estimated in 4 groups of coastal habitats found in the Sivash. Theseincluded: salt marshes; coastal precipices; steppe, pasture, arable agricultural lands and arboreal vegetation. Breeding numbers of 42 species (ind/km) are given for different biotopes (Table 1-4).
